In Sendai and the Miyagi Prefecture in general, there are many sightseeing spots where one can enjoy the autumn foliage.
From around the second half of September, the autumn foliage is at its most beautiful at the top of the mountains, and then until around early November the base of the mountain and the city area has its time to showcase the beautiful autumn leaves.
Season: From late September until around November.

Akiu Otaki Falls(秋保大滝)
Chosen to be among the best one hundred waterfalls in Japan, the Akiu Waterfall is 6m wide and has a 55m high straight drop. The autumn leaves here are very popular.
Season: Around mid October to early November.

Zuihoden Mausoleum(瑞鳳殿)
At Zuihoden, the mausoleum of the three Date feudal lords including Lord Date Masamune, visitors can enjoy a collaboration of colorful maple leaves and Momoyama-style architecture.
Season: Around November.

Jozenji-dori Avenue(定禅寺通り)
Jozenji-dori Avenue is a picturesque 700m long Zelkova tree-lined street and symbolic of Sendai as the “City of Trees”. From the green leaves of spring, the seasonal color change in autumn, and the illumination in winter, each season has its own scenic splendor.

Jogi Nyorai Saihoji Temple(定義如来西方寺)
Jogi Nyorai Saihoji Temple is located in an area that is surrounded by mountains and an abundance of nature that shows a different facet of its beauty with each changing season. The contrast of the pagoda and the colorful trees is breathtakingly beautiful.
Season: Mid October to early November

Nishi Park(西公園)
In a corner of the expansive Nishi Park lies a spectacular carpet woven by fallen autumn leaves.
Season: November

Kamo Shrine(賀茂神社)
The Kamo Shrine’s torii gate (a traditional gate of the gods) and the autumn leaves is a match made in heaven. It’s a sight that visitors should not miss when making their Sendai autumn leaf viewing pilgrimage.
Season: Around November

Naruko Gorge(鳴子峡)
A 100m high cliff with a width that extends for almost 2.5km, Naruko Gorge boasts vast scenic autumn views.
Season: Around mid October to early November.

Entsuin Temple(円通院)
The beauty of the traditional Japanese gardens at Entsuin Temple overwhelm all who view it. During the night-time illumination, the autumn leaves reflect off the water and create a magical viewing experience.
Season: Around late October to Late November.

Matsushima(松島)
At Matsushima, as well as Enstuin Temple there are other much loved autumn foliage sightseeing areas, such as, Kanrantei, Soukanzan and Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park.
Season: Around late October to mid November.

Mt. Kurikoma(栗駒山)
Mt. Kurikoma is a 1,626m high mountain that spans the Miyagi, Iwate and Akita prefectures. In the autumn season, the mountain from the summit to the base is draped in red, orange and yellow, with the Japanese stone pine trees providing a green accent. Owing to its beauty, it is known as “The Carpet of the Gods”.
Season: Around mid September to Mid October

Nametsu Otaki Falls(滑津大滝)
With an abundance of water that flows down the full width of the river, the Nametsu Otaki Falls, also known as the “Two Step Waterfall”, has a unique form that inspires awe in all those who see it. Limited to the autumn foliage season, visitors can enjoy the waterfall illumination.
Season: Around mid October to early November.

Zao Echo Line(蔵王エコーライン)
On the Zao Echo Line, there is no shortage of autumn foliage sightseeing spots. The view of the autumn leaves from Okama (a volcanic lake) located near the Zaokattadake summit, and the Zao mountain range is a sight to behold.
Season: Around early to mid October.
Caution: the mountain roads are closed in winter, from early November to mid April the next year.

Rinnoji Temple(輪王寺)
Rinnoji Temple is a Date family buddhist temple. It has what is considered one of the most beautiful Japanese gardens in Tohoku and its three-story pagoda, red bridge and pond have a certain charm. It is particularly popular during the autumn foliage season.
Season: Around November.

Homei Shijuhachi-taki Falls(鳳鳴四十八滝)
The Homei Shijuhachi-taki Falls is located within walking distance from the parking area. The water flowing between the trees down a natural staircase waterfall is stunning. It is particularly recommended during the autumn foliage season.
Season: Around early to late November.
