Built on the former site of Sendai Castle’s third bailey, this museum introduces Sendai’s history and culture. Its collection of approximately 100,000 items includes cultural assets donated by the Date family of the Sendai domain, as well as historical, cultural, and fine and decorative art materials associated with the domain and the family.
You can see precious items unique to Sendai, including Date Masamune’s black-lacquered five-piece cuirass armor, an Important Cultural Property, and materials related to the Keicho-era mission to Europe, designated a National Treasure. The permanent exhibition changes with the seasons, offering something different depending on when you visit.
Please note that, for conservation purposes, the original armor and its replica are displayed during separate scheduled periods.
