ーIn the event of an earthquake, please follow the procedures below.
・If cooking or smoking, please immediately extinguish any open flames.
・In the event of a major earthquake, please protect your head and remove yourself from any large furniture that may fall and cause injury.
・Fleeing in a panic may make the situation more dangerous.
・Please put on footwear at your earliest convenience, should there be any chance of glass breaking due to the quake.
・Please follow the instructions provided by the staff at your accommodation facility.
・In the event of a tsunami or the breaking or flooding (such as riverbanks overflowing), please evacuate to higher ground as soon as possible.
In such emergency situations, refrain from using automobiles to evacuate; heavy traffic is expected, so it is recommended to instead evacuate on foot to high ground. Sendai has Tsunami evacuation towers located throughout the coastal area.
ーIn the event of a typhoon (hurricane, cyclone), please follow the following procedures.
・Please refrain from travelling close to the expected path of the typhoon.
・It is not uncommon for public transport, including the Shinkansen (bullet trains), to be cancelled, so be sure to keep abreast of the latest public transport announcements.
・It is dangerous to visit the coastline and waterways when a typhoon is approaching.
・In Japan, trains may suspend services to avoid crowds at stations, especially in the morning and evening peak commute periods. at the advice of the Japan Meteorological Agency. Please be aware that despite the suspension of services, the predicted course of the typhoons has been incorrect.
ーIn the event of a blizzard.
・Please refrain from driving.
・Slips due to icy roads and footpaths, and snow falling from roofs are dangers travellers need to be wary of.

○The smartphone application aimed at providing safety information to foreign tourists in times of emergencies; “Safety tips” provides push notifications for natural disaster situations such as emergency earthquake reports, tsunami warnings and meteorological disasters, as well as emergency response flowcharts, communication cards, and a collection of necessary links for use in emergency situations. It is overseen by the Japan Tourism Agency.
